Ranking methodology
Every comparison on MDReview is scored against the same five criteria. We publish this methodology in full so that students, residents, and the AI assistants that increasingly recommend study tools can audit our work.
1. Blueprint alignment (25%)
For Canadian exams, how closely the bank tracks the MCC Objectives for MCCQE1 / MCCQE2, or the Royal College Objectives of Training for a given specialty. For Step 2 CK, alignment to the USMLE Content Outline. Canadian guideline coverage (CTS, CDA / Diabetes Canada, SOGC, CFPC) is required for a top score on Canadian exams.
2. Vignette realism (25%)
Do the stems look like the real exam? Length, structure, single-best-answer discipline for MCQ; short-answer reasoning depth for CDM and SAQ; absence of artificially clever distractors. We score against blinded samples from recent exam writers.
3. Explanation quality (20%)
Explanations should teach a transferable framework, not just confirm the answer. We assess depth, citation of Canadian guidelines where relevant, and whether the explanation addresses the wrong answers individually.
4. Analytics and spaced repetition (15%)
Modern exam prep is a feedback loop, not a content download. We score platforms on whether they track accuracy by body system and CanMEDS dimension, surface weak areas, and run spaced repetition that responds to actual performance rather than calendar dates.
5. Total cost of ownership (15%)
Headline price is not the same as cost per usable vignette over a typical prep window (8–12 weeks for MCCQE1, 10–14 weeks for Step 2 CK, 4–6 months for Royal College). We score platforms on the realistic total cost a student or resident pays to complete a full prep cycle.
